Texas Listening Sessions

About

Representatives from the U.S. Department of Education's Office of Special Education and Rehabilitative Services (OSERS) and the Texas Education Agency (TEA) conducted a series of listening sessions in Texas during the week of Dec. 12. The sessions provided members of the public an opportunity to comment on the timely identification and evaluation of students with disabilities, as well as the delivery of special education and related services to all eligible children under the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act, or IDEA. OSERS also set up a Blog for interested parties to submit written comments. This Blog was open for comments from December 5, 2016 through January 6, 2017.

In an Oct. 3, 2016 letter to Texas Commissioner Mike Morath, the Department raised concerns regarding Texas's compliance with a number of requirements of IDEA. The state responded to the letter on Nov. 2, 2016. During the sessions, the Department hopes to hear from parents, family members, students, advocates and school personnel.
