video Kristina Walrath explains what she sees as the most important qualities that a teacher ought to have.

To me, teaching is not a job— it is a lifestyle. It is my passion and a great part of my identity. Growing up, I lived in many different parts of the country and overseas. I was exposed to various cultures, communities, and experiences throughout my elementary and middle school years. I was so inspired by the knowledge I gleaned and the opportunities I had that I decided in seventh grade to become a teacher so that I could share our world's people, customs, and geography with others. Although my choice of profession did not alter, my motives and conviction for becoming a teacher have greatly developed and deepened.

I began my pursuit to become a teacher at the University of Delaware where I was one of 25 participants selected to pilot an urban education program for the duration of my undergraduate studies. Instead of completing my coursework, practicum, and student teaching requirements in a suburban classroom setting, I did so within the educational contexts of low-socioeconomic communities. Teaching within these environments broadened my awareness of the achievement gap that exists in this country and ignited my determination to devote my energy and efforts toward providing an excellent education to all children.

After graduating from college, I joined Teach For America and began my teaching career at Shaw Middle School in Southwest Philadelphia. After two years of teaching a sixth grade, self-contained classroom, I was offered the opportunity to design and implement my own sixth-grade learning academy that exemplified a commitment to excellence in academics and character within the school.

Over the next two years, I expanded the academy model to become the operating system and standard culture of performance at Shaw. Over the past five years at Shaw, I have seen my professional career evolve from a classroom teacher to an academy leader, curriculum coordinator, mentor for students and teachers, community liaison, and coach for new teachers. These experiences have enabled me to refine my qualities not only as a passionate and purposeful educator, but as an ambitious and dedicated leader as well. I have the "hunger," determination and capacity to be and do whatever it takes to create a classroom, school, and community that nurtures, educates, and empowers our children to be committed to their personal pursuit of excellence.

In addition to my career at Shaw, I also work as a selector and trainer for the Philadelphia Teaching Fellows and as a volunteer in a number of capacities with Teach For America. I currently am enrolled in graduate school at Cabrini College to receive my master's degree in education and certification as a literacy specialist.

Outside of work, I enjoy spending time with friends and family, exploring the great outdoors, traveling, dancing, or reading.
