| Keenan Arrives, Sets Priorities for DAEL |
Newly appointed division director Cheryl Keenan arrived in her Division of Adult Education and Literacy (DAEL) office this week. In a move to hit the ground running, she established several long-term priorities and immediate operational priorities. Larger issues include reauthorization, improving program quality, and realigning management structures. Operational issues include moving forward with public meetings on reauthorization, completing agreements with the states on performance levels, making grant funds available to states on July 1 and completing Community Technology Centers grant awards. Welcome, Cheryl! |
| $15 Million in CTC Grants Available |
Community Technology Centers (CTC) grants totaling $15 million are available for eligible applicants, the Department announced June 4th. The CTC program helps eligible applicants create or expand centers to provide disadvantaged residents of economically distressed urban or rural communities access to technology and the training to use it. This year's competition requires applicants to offer adult education and family literacy activities through technology and the Internet. Approximately 83 grants are expected and the deadline for applications for this competition is July 19. Download notice and application forms. |
| Welfare Developments on Capitol Hill |
As welfare reauthorization moves to the Senate this month, a number of Members are promoting the potential of adult education for moving people off the welfare rolls. A May 23rd letter sent by 20 Senators to the Chairman and Ranking Member of the Senate Finance Committee, Senators Max Baucus (D-MT) and Charles Grassley (R-IA), advocates counting vocational, post-secondary and adult basic education, including GED, English literacy and literacy activities toward work requirements. The Senate Finance Committee has jurisdiction over welfare reform in the Senate. Meanwhile, Senator Olympia Snowe (R-ME) introduced legislation that would allow clients to take up to two years of vocational education to help themselves off welfare. Under that bill, clients could count vocational and post-secondary education toward the entire work requirement for up to 24 months. Email Jon Weintraub. |
