Objectives: To provide an integrated, computer-based literacy/life skills/pre-employment program targeting offenders at or below an eighth grade reading level.

Procedures: The project will use a standardized instrument to assess the reading levels of offenders housed at participating correctional programs. The project will use an integrated learning system software package that provides individually paced lessons. Instructors will be available to assist at all times. Offenders will also participate in pre-employment classes and workshops.

Outcomes/Results/Products: To improve the basic reading and computational skills of 200 offenders per year. To develop a program model that integrates literacy, life skills and pre-employment training for a target population of offenders. To produce a guide for implementing such a program. To evaluate program impacts. To disseminate implementation guide and evaluation results at conferences and to agencies seeking to impact this target population.
