Objectives: Provide functionally illiterate inmates with workplace literacy, basic reading and math skills, and post-release outreach services.
Procedures: Upon intake, all inmates will be assessed at the correctional facilities. Those inmates showing low reading and math achievements will receive 25 hours per week instruction in classroom settings. Those with learning disabilities will receive specialized instruction. Computer-assisted instruction and outcome-based educational modules will be part of the instructional delivery system.
Outcomes/Results/Products: Increased reading and math achievement levels; 30 outcome-based education modules; assessment battery; computer software program developed for follow up; resource directory for at least 3 Michigan counties. Dissemination of materials to 65 other community education programs in Michigan. Publication of articles and presentations.
