Objectives: To provide contextualized literacy instruction for 344 detainees, increasing their reading levels, their capacity to enter the workforce, and their capacity to remain out of jail. To develop appropriate curriculum and to evaluate outcomes.

Procedures: (1) Job Lit I--four 8-week cycles, each with five levels 10-hour per week small group instruction supported by an additional 10 of peer tutoring in a specialized dorm setting with New York City Department of Corrections self-esteem counseling and (2) Job Lit II--four 8-week cycles, each with three levels 10-hour per week small group instruction only, with inmates housed in separate dorms.

Outcomes/Results/Products: Job Lit will yield (1) increased participant reading skills; (2) prototypes student work for each level portfolio evaluation; (3) post-program referral into community programs; (4) collection of data for projected evaluation of skill achievement, self-esteem, and post-program recidivism of Job Lit I and Job Lit II participants; (5) correlation of TABE and TALS tests.
