Objectives: (1) Provide comprehensive assessment to approximately 920 inmates. (2) Provide literacy instruction at appropriate levels to approximately 616 inmates (for an average of 20 students per class for 80 hours of instruction). (3) Provide instruction in workplace communication to 80 correctional facilities staff members (20 hours of instruction to four classes of twenty staff members).
Procedures: Comprehensive assessment enables the inmates to make realistic judgments about their education and training needs by providing them with multidimensional information about themselves. The literacy instruction will develop the foundation skills and work place competencies outlined in the blueprint for high performance, SCANS report.
Outcomes/Results/Products:
(1) Inmates will demonstrate increased measurable levels of functional
literacy and of computer literacy.
(2) Non-native English speakers will demonstrate great influence in English.
(3) Dissemination in the form of published articles and conference
presentations.
(4) Comprehensive Project Evaluation.
