This proposal, a joint three-year effort between the Alaska Department of Education and the University of Alaska Southeast, is designed to develop content standards and implementation frameworks in English/language arts, fine arts, and world languages. The Alaska 2000 English/Language Arts, Fine Arts, and World Languages Framework Project will:

Each project will be accomplished through activities designed to meet measurable objectives.

The need for this project is based on the Alaska 2000 Education Initiative, which involve state government, educators, and the entire citizenry in systemic restructuring of the school system. Among the Alaska 2000 recommendations is a call for the development of standards and assessment in ten content areas, including English/language arts, fine arts, and world languages. Over the past three years, committees of educators, business people, parents, students, and members of the community at large have worked to set high standards in seven subjects and to define a new state assessment system. Work is also in progress on implementation frameworks, including pre- and inservice development for teachers, in five areas. This project will build on both the procedures and the premises of Alaska 2000, ensuring efficiency in creating Alaska's vision of a public school system, controlled by the public and unique to its cultures and geography, which will graduate world class citizens who will communicate effectively, think logically and critically, discover and nurture their own creative talents, mater essential vocational and technological skills, be responsible citizens, be committed to their own health and fitness, and accept personal responsibility for sustaining themselves economically.
