State Curriculum Frameworks and Content Standards

Content standards and curriculum frameworks that establish challenging academic expectations for all students are at the heart of many state and local reform strategies. Content standards and curriculum frameworks set out what all students should know and be able to do in the core academic areas. By placing a new emphasis on student's efforts to use knowledge and skills, content standards reflect both a solid grounding in the basics and higher order thinking.

Since 1992, the Office of Educational Research and Improvement has supported, through grants to States, the development of state level curriculum frameworks and content standards. These projects were funded under the Secretary's Fund for the Improvement of Education and the Dwight D. Eisenhower National Program for Mathematics and Science Education. (Institute contact: Maggie McNeely)

Project abstracts are listed by state. We encourage you to visit the Department's map of state education agencies to read about individual state reform plans and to see how these particular grants support and extend those efforts. We would also encourage you to contact grant Project Directors for further information on their activities.
