What We Do

The National Institute on Postsecondary Education, Libraries, and Lifelong Learning (PLLI) supports research to help improve libraries, postsecondary education, literacy, and lifelong learning. The Institute supports research activities investigating how adults best learn - in formal educational institutions and in work settings as well as in informal settings, such as libraries, museums, and communities. It also supports work in adult learning in those areas not being addressed by other entities within the Federal government. It supports research related to assessing individual, program, and institutional performance; institutional and classroom policies and practices to improve matriculation persistence, achievement, and graduation by disadvantaged students; effective methods for helping adults upgrade their literacy and educational levels and vocational skills; and curriculum and instruction for the preparation and continung education of teachers.

PLLI conducts its work through large scale research projects, field initiated studies, data collection, peer review, reports, and collaboration with other education agencies and stakeholder groups.
