Library Research Priorities:

PLLI commissioned a study, Library Research: 1983-1997, to examine research priorities defined in earlier federal efforts to design a library research agenda in conjunction with an examination of funding levels of library research from federal and non-federal funding sources. Among other things, the study found that total funding for library research has averaged less than three-quarters of a million dollars per year since 1983. The results of this study led to the convening of a workgroup of library experts in government, universities, national associations, and foundations to discuss the need for a national focus on library research and to offer suggestions for next steps. The proceedings of this conference identified five critical issues and recommended five possible actions for addressing the research needs of the library field which PLLI will pursue in partnership and collaboration with other interested agencies.
