On behalf of the Department of Education, I extend my sympathies to the family of the student killed at Lew Wallace High School in Gary, Indiana.

Too often violence finds its way into our schools, and our Department will continue to work with administrators, teachers, parents and students to reduce the impact of violence on our children. We have offered our assistance to the Gary Community School Corporation with its efforts to respond to this senseless incident.

I continue also to encourage communities like Gary to work with their public schools to address school and student safety. Educators need support from our communities to make our places of learning safe for students and teachers.
