"Designs for Learning:
Building Schools for the 21st Century"
Tuesday, June 16, 1998
8:00 p.m. - 9:00 p.m. (ET)

Many American communities, faced with the twin challenges of a dramatically increasing student population and rapidly deteriorating school facilities, are giving serious thought to the issues of school design and construction. How tomorrow's learning environments should be designed, how construction and renovation can be financed, and who participates in the design decisions are key elements in the discussion.

The June edition of U.S. Secretary of Education Dick Riley's Satellite Town Meeting will focus on how a community can plan and build schools for tomorrow. In the spotlight will be the Charlotte-Mecklenburg (North Carolina) Schools, a district where educators and community leaders are designing the schools they need in a thoughtful, innovative and forward-looking way.

Live from Charlotte, Secretary Riley and his guests will address questions such as:

  • How can a school's physical design support new approaches to teaching and learning?
  • How can new learning environments be constructed to accommodate growing school populations?
  • How can school buildings be better designed for multiple purposes, including use as community centers or sites for after school programs?
  • How can new school designs anticipate telecommunications and technology needs? and
  • How can schools be designed to ensure student safety and discipline?

To participate, all you need is to locate a facility with satellite downlink capabilities. Or, call your local cable access station or school board channel and give them the satellite coordinates:
