"Reading Partners:
Teaming Up to Help Children Read Well"
Tuesday, May 19, 1998
8:00 p.m. - 9:00 p.m. (ET)
The recent landmark study by the National Research Council defined the best practices for helping children become successful readers. These recommendations include a focus on children from birth through pre-school, with parents playing a crucial role as a child's first teachers. The study also found that extra learning time, when combined with parental involvement and quality school instruction, boosts a student's reading skills and motivation to learn. The President's top educational initiative, The American Reads Challenge, puts these recommendations into action. In this nationwide town meeting, U.S. Secretary of Education Richard W. Riley will welcome a panel of guests who will discuss:
- How parents and caregivers of babies and young children can create a literacy-rich and language-rich environment to foster a love of books and to prepare children for later reading success.
- How partnerships between families, schools, community groups and businesses can support extended learning programs for elementary school children after-school and during the summer.
- How college and university students in the Federal Work-Study program can serve as tutors and reading partners for younger students.
- How special approaches to family literacy can help students with limited English proficiency and students with disabilities overcome obstacles.
