"Think College Early:
Preparing Academically and Financially"
Tuesday, March 17, 1998
8:00 p.m. - 9:00 p.m. (ET)

The March Satellite Town Meeting will focus on helping middle school students understand the importance of going to college, and recognize the significance of hard work and planning to achieve that goal. The Town Meeting will also explore the vital impact of support and high expectations from all those who touch the life of a middle schooler: parents and family, communities, businesses, religious organizations, state and local governments and universities. U.S. Secretary of Education Richard W. Riley will welcome a panel of parents, educators, and business and community leaders who will discuss ways to encourage students to:

  • Take challenging courses, especially the college "gateway" courses of algebra in the eighth grade and geometry in the ninth grade.
  • Find and connect with mentors who will support their postsecondary education goals.
  • Learn about financial aid programs, including loans, grants, tax cuts and savings plans to help families pay for college.

To participate, all you need is to locate a facility with satellite downlink capabilities. Or, call your local cable access station or school board channel and give them the satellite coordinates:
