Family Involvement
Preparing for College, Academically and Financially
Tuesday, April 16, 1996
8:30 p.m. - 9:30 p.m. (ET)
The April Town Meeting will look at how schools and communities can help students and their families prepare both academically and financially for higher education. U.S. Secretary of Education Richard Riley and Deputy Secretary Madeleine Kunin will host a conversation with a panel of innovators from around the nation who can share practical advice about planning for college that will help students succeed at both two-year and four- year institutions.
Discussion topics will include:
- What core courses are part of a college preparatory curriculum for a high school student?
- What skills do students need to stay in college once they are admitted?
- What kinds of partnerships between schools, businesses, and other community organizations help ensure that all students have access to higher education, including disadvantaged and minority populations?
- What long-term savings options do families have to help them finance their children's college educations?
- What financial aid is available from states and private scholarship sources for families who need extra help in paying for a student's college education?
- What federal financial aid is available, and what are the steps to apply?
