Religion and Public Schools

Welcome to Religion and Public Schools, a U.S. Department of Education site containing guidelines, publications and resources on the topics of religious expression in public schools and faith community support of children's learning. Our goal is to provide you with the most current and accurate information on these important topics.

Religious Expression in Public Schools: A Statement of Principles was first sent to every public school superintendent in August of 1995 by Secretary of Education Richard W. Riley at the direction of President Clinton. The guidelines were updated and re-issued in May of 1998 and re-released without change in December of 1999.

On this site you will find not only the guidelines, but materials that will help school districts to design their own policies on religious expression, inform teachers and principals of their responsibilities and the rights of their students regarding religious expression, and provide parents with accurate information about their child's right to religious expression.
