Team Report

How Missouri is implementing the research findings in the National Research Council Report, "Preventing Reading Difficulties in Young Children."

The Learning First Alliance is sponsoring Missouri?s Reading Initiative which will focus on training teachers PreK-3 in practical strategies which will "prevent reading difficulties in young children." Lead trainers will develop materials and review current research to provide Missouri teachers with research-based professional development.

A Missouri Success Story

The 3R?s Project (for K-3 children): This project encourages children to read and write over the summer to retain learning gains made during the school year. In summer 1998, 4,500 participants from 62 community sites (e.g., boys? & girls? clubs, housing projects, daycare centers, etc.) attended reading clubs. Over 25,000 books were distributed to provide personal libraries for children.
