Department of Defense Education Activity

Team Report

State Commitment Form

State: Department of Defense
Team Leader: Richard Hunter
Phone Number: 703-696-4471 x 1712

As a result of attending this Summit, what two things does your state team commit to doing in the next six months toward enhanced literacy for children and their families?

  1. The Department of Defense Education Activity's (DoDEA) team will share the Summit's research findings and report to the Headquarters' Education Directorate in February of 1999. A summary of the information will then be disseminated to all districts through the district superintendents and district curriculum coordinators. Each district will be requested to submit an action plan for how they will share the research with the schools, parents and communities by May 1999.
  2. Since the summit, a plan has been submitted to the Pentagon 1) to provide resources to reduce class size in first through third grade to a recommended pupil:teacher ratio of one to eighteen and 2) provide full day kindergarten.
What can the U.S. Department of Education do to help YOU help children read well and independently by the end of the third grade?
  1. The U.S. Department of Education could assist DoDEA by lobbying for resources to address the reading issues and recommendations in the report.
  2. The U.S. Department of Education should continue their leadership in promoting reading by holding other summits, providing public announcements and continuing research on preventing reading difficulties in young children.
