Michael James Rivas of Texas—Member of the President's Commission on Excellence in Special Education

Michael Rivas is an associate project manager with DTM and Associates Architects in San Antonio, Texas. He holds a bachelor's degree in environmental design architecture from Texas A&M University.

Rivas's interest in special education is primarily a personal, rather than a professional one. His four-year-old son, who is enrolled in a special education preschool in the Northside Independent School District, has autism and his older brother has mental retardation. Rivas has been very involved in his brother's life and education and participated in the Special Olympics. He also serves as an advocate for his son's education and brings a parental and family perspective to the President's Commission on Excellence in Special Education.
