William Berdine is a professor of special education and chair of the Department of Special Education and Rehabilitation Counseling in the University of Kentucky College of Education. He also serves as the coordinator of the University of Kentucky College of Education's Office for Distance Learning. A native of Warren, Pennsylvania, Berdine received a bachelor of arts degree from Lycoming College in 1965 with a major in ancient and medieval history, a master's of education in 1968 with a major in special education administration, and a doctor of education degree with a major in mental retardation/personnel preparation, both from the Pennsylvania State University. Berdine joined the University of Kentucky faculty in 1972 as an assistant professor of special education. During his tenure at UK he has been active in a wide range of university and college leadership endeavors while pursuing an active research, publishing and personnel preparation career. His current research interests involve the transition of students with disabilities from secondary education to postsecondary settings. He is the principal investigator on a federally funded demonstration grant-the University of Kentucky Engaging Differences project-that is developing a replicable computer-based personnel support system to aid university administrators, faculty and auxiliary services staff to work effectively with students with disabilities on the UK campus. Berdine is the president of the Higher Education Consortium for Special Education (HECSE), which comprises the nation's major doctoral-conferring personnel preparation programs in special education. Berdine is married to a special education teacher with 25 years of experience and has two adult children.
