AMERICA READS TRAINING CONFERENCES

An on-line brochure and pre-registration form for the upcoming America Reads Training Conferences is now available. A pre-registration form can also be obtained by calling the 24-hour Flash Fax system at 202-205-3279. The document number is 001522.

FAMILY LITERACY FWS WAIVER

A reminder that effective July 1, 1998, the new family literacy FWS waiver will allow 100 percent of the wages of FWS students tutoring children and/or their parents or caregivers in family literacy programs to be paid from federal dollars. Research shows that children whose parents work with them on literacy skills during early childhood have a better chance of reading well and independently. This new waiver will provide additional flexibility to respond to the President's America Reads Challenge.

TUTORING PARTNERSHIP SUBCONTRACTS

The U.S. Department of Education's Regional Educational Laboratories will award sixty fixed price subcontracts of $50,000 each to tutoring partnerships across the nation for the purpose of providing direct training to Federal Work-Study and volunteer reading tutors. Partnerships eligible for these subcontracts include colleges or universities that collaborate with local schools, educational agencies, other colleges and universities, and community and/or family literacy organizations. Additional partners may include America Reads/Read*Write*Now sites, AmeriCorps*VISTA programs, or other Corporation for National Service programs engaged in improving students' reading. Both new and existing partnerships are eligible to apply. A copy of the Request For Proposals, which provides more information on the subcontracts and the application process, will be mailed to you. The Request for Proposals can also be found on-line at www.NWREL.org/americareads/ or by contacting your Regional Educational Laboratory. The deadline for applications is August 13, 1998.
