9:15 AM PRESENTATION: Improving the Quality of Teaching in Mathematics and Science
--   Dr. James W. Stigler gave a 2-hour long presentation to the Glenn Commission. Dr. Stigler's presentation focused on the TIMSS videotape study he directed and how to improve the quality of teaching in mathematics and science. He suggested that the best way to improve teaching is by improving teaching methods and building a knowledge base for the improvement of teaching. He showed short segments from both a U.S. and Japanese 8th grade mathematics classroom.

2:30 PM PRESENTATION: The Relationship Between Teaching Quality and Higher Student Achievement in Mathematics and Science
--   Secretary Richard W. Riley
gave a 20-minute presentation to the Glenn Commission. In his remarks, Secretary Riley thanked the Commission members for their participation and explained the reasons he wants the Commission to focus on teaching quality in K-12 math and science classrooms. He described the relationship between teaching quality and student achievement in math and science, and made an important distinction between teaching quality and teacher quality issues.

3:15 PM PRESENTATION: Supply, Demand and Quality in Mathematics and Science Teaching
--   Dr. Linda Darling-Hammond
gave a 1-hour long presentation to the Glenn Commission. Dr. Darling-Hammond's presentation gave an overview of the supply, demand and quality in mathematics and science teaching. She discussed the complicated and intertwined issues of supply, recruitment, and hiring practices of math and science teachers, and cited studies linking higher student achievement in math and science with teacher quality variables. She also showed a 15-minute video clip from the PBS Merrow Report entitled "Teacher Crisis: False Alarm?"
