Recent Grants and Contracts

Fund for Innovation in Education: Technology Education Program, Teacher Networking Projects. Continuation grants totaling more than $1.8 million were awarded to 15 projects to demonstrate applications of electronic networks for teacher professional development. Award recipients include public schools and districts, universities, an Indian Nation, and other organizations. ORAD, 219-2143.

Eisenhower National Program for Mathematics & Science Education. Sixteen continuation grants totaling $3,411,439 were awarded to institutions of higher education, state and local education agencies, and private nonprofit education organizations. ORAD, 219-2173.

Public Library State Grants. Fifty-two of the 55 state library administrative agencies received FY 95 state-administered grants totaling $114.2 million to fund new public library service projects, public library construction and technology projects, and interlibrary cooperative projects. Center for Research on the Education of Students Placed At Risk. Grant awards totaling $27.7 million over 5 years were awarded jointly to Johns Hopkins University and Howard University to establish a center that will focus on how inner-city and rural schools, families, and community agencies can work together to ensure that students placed at risk of educational failure achieve their full potential throughout their schooling and beyond (see New R&D Center on Education of Students Placed at Risk). The Family-School Partnership Program. FY 95 continuation grants totaling over $1.5 million were awarded to 11 local education agencies to support a variety of cooperative activities that build strong family/school/community partnerships aimed at boosting student academic performance. The Ready-to-Learn Television Program. The Corporation for Public Broadcasting was awarded $7 million to develop educational programming for preschool and early elementary school children and their families; to develop educational television, programming, and ancillary materials to increase school readiness for young children in limited-English-proficient households and to increase family literacy; and to develop accompanying support materials and services that promote the effective use of educational programming. Library Services for Indian Tribes & Hawaiian Natives Basic Grants Program. Alu Like, Inc., was awarded $935,272 for Indian tribes and $623,595 for Hawaiian Natives to improve library services, enhance the skills of library staff, and increase the quality and availability of library holdings. Rhode Island Scholar-Athlete Games. The Institute for International Sports at the University of Rhode Island was awarded $400,000 to fund the Scholar-Athlete Games. The program will serve as a motivational tool for educational excellence and promote team sports and cultural activities. ORAD, 219-2164.
