Assistive technology devices allow
many students with learning disabilities to
function in the regular curriculum as equals with
their nondisabled peers. Allowing students to
access handheld word processors with word
prediction or text to speech allows students with
spelling, grammar and writing deficits to function
independently in the classroom. Students do not
have to receive copies of teacher and/or peer
notes. Smart boards allow students who are not
able to copy/ write tasks independently to receive
notes. However, many assistive technology devices
and programs should be made available as
instructional technology that would benefit all
students. It would be wonderful if all software
were available to assist all students so all
students may succeed and differences were
accounted for before instruction was presented not
after students are
failing.
