Remembering September 11th

On December 5, 2001, the White House Office of the Press Secretary announced that President George W. Bush is asking countries across the world to hold remembrance events and to play their national anthems or other appropriate songs on December 11, 2001, at the exact moment the first airplane struck the World Trade Center in New York City three months ago.

U.S. Secretary of Education Rod Paige is encouraging schools around the country that are in session at 8:46 a.m. EST on Tuesday December 11, 2001, to participate in remembrance events that celebrate "The Star-Spangled Banner." He is also encouraging schools that do participate and schools that may not yet be in session at that time to host classroom discussions and lessons focusing on the words and the history of this national anthem by Francis Scott Key.

Secretary Paige will be participating in a remembrance program with students at a Washington, D.C. area school.
