U.S. Education Department Issues ADA Self-Evaluation Guide for Public Schools

Under the Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990, public schools are required to accommodate the special needs of individuals with physical or mental disabilities.

To help schools comply with the letter and the spirit of the law, the U.S. Department of Education's Office for Civil Rights and National Institute on Disability and Rehabilitation Research have prepared a self-evaluation guide.

Written in straightforward, non-legalistic language, Compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act: A Self- Evaluation Guide for Public Elementary and Secondary Schools reviews requirements and offers suggestions and worksheets to assess compliance.

"Each year we receive hundreds of complaints, alleging violations of the ADA," said Norma Cant&250;, assistant secretary for civil rights. "In many cases, it's simply the failure of the school district to fully understand and act on the requirements of the law. We hope this guide will help school districts in complying with the requirements of the ADA."

School districts may request a copy of Compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act: A Self-Evaluation Guide for Public Elementary and Secondary Schools from their regional Disability and Business Technical Assistance Center, 1-800-949- 4ADA. Additional copies of the guide may be purchased from the U.S. Government Printing Office for $21 per copy. The stock number for the guide is 065-000-00774-6.
