$1 BILLION AWARDED FOR STATE VOCATIONAL EDUCATION PROGRAMS

The U.S. Department of Education has released more than $1 billion in state grants for vocational education programs.

"Vocational education is no longer metal ash trays and wooden birdhouses," said Patricia McNeil, assistant secretary for vocational and adult education. "Today's vocational-technical education students are learning robotics, computer assisted design, aviation technology and other related subjects. They are being prepared for both college and 21st century careers."

The grants, administered by the department=s Office of Vocational and Adult Education, and authorized under the Carl D. Perkins Vocational and Technology Education Act, will be used to improve the academic, technological, vocational and employability skills of secondary and postsecondary students by promoting high academic standards.

In addition, the money will help foster the integration of vocational and technological instruction and develop strong partnerships with businesses, educational institutions and economic development systems.

States also received Tech-Prep grants to allow curriculum realignment between high schools and postsecondary institutions, thereby promoting effective student transitions.

NOTE TO EDITORS: Following is a list of the grants for each state, along with names and phone numbers of state directors.
