Local and State Proclamations and Resolutions

Working with Governors, Mayors and Boards of Education

You will want to bring recognition to your local community for your America Goes Back to School event. Here is information to help you get resolutions and proclamations at the state, city, and school board level.

------------------------------------

* Local Proclamations

Ask a local official to issue an America Goes Back to School month in your city or community. To make it easier for the official and his or her ceremonial services staff, it helps for you to draft a proclamation and send it to them with a cover letter explaining the significance of America Goes Back to School. Indicate your interest in meeting with the official and make an appointment. For the signing, work with the official's staff to alert media (see "Working with the Media" in this package). Arrange to have a photographer at the signing and distribute the photo to local papers. Be sure to display your proclamation at America Goes Back to School events and reproduce it in newsletters and programs.

* State Resolutions

Ask your state superintendent, state legislature, or governor to endorse America Goes Back to School events by passing a resolution recognizing the importance for families, schools, communities, and employers to develop partnerships to help children learn.
